It is 3:15 and the buses have left. The ROCK OST at Jefferson Middle School is in full swing, and the room buzzes with fun and excitement. On one side of the room, a few students are quietly working on their projects for crochet tutoring. They are hoping to catch up on projects before Friday’s crochet club. On the other side of the room, teens are developing their characters for DnD club, practicing different voices.

Peer-Led Clubs at The ROCK

Teens can develop their own clubs at The ROCK based on their interests. The ROCK provides materials, and teens provide the ideas.

One of the newest clubs at Jefferson is crochet club. “My grandma taught me how to crochet and I like being able to do it with my friends at the ROCK,” says one of the students. Another says, “I like to crochet because it’s relaxing. I can do it while listening to music and it helps me feel calm.”

At The ROCK, teens have a chance to try new things in different clubs. These include Lego, slime, reading, art, theater, and more! Last year, the Jefferson site set the record with 15 different student-led clubs. Clubs provide an opportunity for youth choice and voice in the program.

Student voices: Celebrating Chinese New Year at The ROCK

The last week of January, students at The ROCK will be able to participate in a Chinese New Year celebration. The sites will host a guest speaker from Dow High School. Students will have a chance to learn about Chinese culture, make crafts, and play fun games in honor of the new year.

This is a great chance for teens to learn about different cultures from their peers in a fun and inviting atmosphere.
